Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Before I start, can we all agree that taking pictures of mirrors in rooms with no natural light is like the hardest thing ever? So don’t judge the awesomeness of the new mirrors by my lacking photography skillz!

This is the last part of the bathroom makeover reveal! If you missed the previous parts you can read them here, here, here, here, and here.

As promised, today we’re talking mirrors. When I bought the house this bathroom featured a lovely (sarcasm) builder-grade mirror and tetanus medicine cabinet (that thing was rusty and gross).

So, when we painted the room I ripped out the old medicine cabinet and had my dad replace it with a new one.

That was definitely the easy part!

The large (6’ x 3.5’) mirror survived for a few more months…until last Friday night when I decided it needed to come down that very minute. I was on my way to my boyfriend’s house when I decided to tear it down. Umm, big mistake.

Words of Wisdom: Those mirrors are way heavier than they look.

Long story short, I got the mirror down by myself, but I’d definitely recommend 2 people for this task. Like HIGHLY recommend 2 people.

The next day I painted (3 coats!) over the space where the mirror had been. You can still kind of see the outline of the mirror, but that’s a project for another year day.

I found a framed mirror at Bed Bath & Beyond for $39.99. I found a similar mirror at Home Depot for $69.99, so I thought the mirror at BB&B was a pretty good deal (plus they always send out 20%-off coupons). After being indecisive for a day (per usual), I bought the mirror and hung it up.

I didn’t really like the color, so I decided to paint the frame black.

Gray primer, black paint, and a little poly later I had this:

Moment of silence for the builder-grade mirror and tetanus cabinet?

No? OK, without further ado:

*swoon* I wanted to show y’all how awesome it looks with the black vanity, but that’d ruin the final reveal, so you’ll just have to wait for that part.

Yeah, yeah – I know I’ve been slacking this week. I’ve been working my tail off, but I’m suffering from project A.D.D. I have half a dozen projects in work, but nothing completed…until now!

Last week I didn’t have a bathroom makeover feature…because I didn’t have either of the remaining projects finished! Now they are both done so this week I’ll be sharing 2 bathroom makeover projects! If you missed the previous parts you can read them here, here, here, and here.

Today we’re talking trash cans! Last week it was hampers, this week trash cans…exciting topics here lately!

I’ve been looking for a trash can for the bathroom for months now, but I could never find exactly what I wanted. Last Saturday I was wandering around Hobby Lobby (surprise, surprise) and I found this raw wood trash can and “light bulb” (as Gru from Despicable Me would say).

Duh! I can make a trashcan!

Supplies

Trashcan
4 pieces of scrapbook paper
Mod Podge
Paint

Step 1

Paint the inside and outside of trashcan.

I only painted the edges of the outside because the paper covers the rest (and I was running out of paint).

Step 2

Once the paint is dry (obviously), trace the trashcan on the back of the scrapbook paper.

Step 3

Cut out the shape plus an extra smidgen (technical measurement).

Step 4

Apply Mod Podge to the trash can and the scrapbook paper.
Paste that sucker on and smooth to remove any bubbles.

Step 5

Apply top coat of Mod Podge.

I also applied a layer of Mod Podge to the inside of the trash can. 

Repeat Steps 2-5 three more times =)

And finished:

Way better than anything I saw in the stores!

Sew Cool

I finally finished the sewing project I mentioned here a couple weeks ago! If you ‘like’ The Junk House on facebook then you already know that I was sewing curtains. I bitched mentioned on there that they were taking forever.

But they are finally done and look awesome, if I do say so myself.

I think the hardest part was finding enough fabric to make 4 panels. I needed 2 ½ yards to make one panel. The first (and closest) Hobby Lobby had enough fabric for 3 of the panels (and 30%-off). The second Hobby Lobby didn’t have any of the fabric I needed. Finally, the third Hobby Lobby (hour round-trip drive) had enough fabric (not 30%-off) for the last panel. Yay!

Let’s get our sew on!

First step, measure and pin! I measured up the side with my handy-dandy tool and pinned/ironed.

Then I folded it over and pinned/ironed. Pinning/ironing is the theme of this post…

Sew, then repeat.

Once both sides were finished I measured a 2 ½ inch pocket for the rod, pinned/ironed, and sewed.

Meanwhile, I hung the curtain rods. I chose the Square Café Rods in Black from Target. They look just like these ones from Ballard, but weren’t $45 a pop! (45 bucks for a curtain rod, are you for serio?)

Anyway, I hung the panel and pinned the perfect length. I sewed up the bottom and BAM! one panel down!

Repeat 3 more times…

Finally, I hung all of the panels and did a little victory dance!

Love! Love! Love! They changed the whole look of the room and hide the ugly wood blinds.

Now I just need some furniture for the sitting nook I’m planning right there!

Damper Hamper

We’re talking hampers today. Exciting, I know…

I’ve had this hamper since I was a freshman in college.

Yep, it survived 2 years in the dorms, 2 years in an apartment, 6 months in storage, and another 2 years in an apartment. But, my gray/black/white bedroom finally got the best of it.

I was in Hobby Lobby two weeks ago buying fabric and I decided to look at baskets for the bathroom. I wasn’t even thinking about hampers until I saw it - black and beautiful, but with a $50 price tag. Yeeeah, I’m not paying 50 bucks for something that holds dirty clothes. So, I decided to hold out for a 50% off sale.

So, last week I was back at Hobby Lobby to buy the 200+ Follower Giveaway prize and I decided to check the basket section. And guess what?! Baskets and Hampers were 50% off. Giggity! I grabbed the last one and ran to the check out…and then forgot it in my car all weekend. Oops!

Sunday my brains came back and I finally got the hamper out of the car and into the bedroom.

A small change, but a great one!

Black Dynamite

(No, I’m not talking about the movie)

It’s time for part 4 of the bathroom makeover reveal!

Today we’re talking about the vanity. Here’s the before picture:

I don’t know if you can tell from the picture, but this thing was rough. It looked pretty shabby, but was awesome to paint because I didn’t have to sand! Booyah!

First, I removed all of the doors and drawers. I primed and painted them with some paint leftover from a pre-blog project. The primer is Valspar Tintable Primer tinted dark gray and the paint is Olympic Premium (satin) in black.

While those were drying I primed and painted the cabinet.

I think the edging turned out pretty legit if I do say so myself. I couldn’t use tape because the wall has so much texture, so that’s freehand baby!

While all of that was drying I sprayed the old hinges ORB. Love me some ORB!

I put all the pieces back together and…jumped around squealing with excitement!

I shouldn’t be surprised, but I am always amazed at the power of paint!

Cost of the project? Free! All of the supplies were leftover from previous projects!

Cribs

You’ve all seen MTV Cribs, right? And y’all know how every episode the celeb shows off what’s in their fridge?

We’ll this is my pitiful version of that.

No, I don’t really live off of margaritas, wine, and cherries…my damn fridge went out over the weekend!

I noticed on Saturday that the candy bar I had stashed in the freezer wasn’t as hard as usual, but I didn’t think much about it. Then, Sunday morning my mom (she was visiting) tells me that the fridge is warm and the freezer is cool, but not freezing temps...sigh. So, we quickly packed everything (except the booze) and took it to my boyfriend’s.

I bought the fridge 5 months ago, so it’s still under warranty, but of course the service center isn’t open on Sundays. Long story short, the repair guy came Tuesday and of course they didn’t have the part, so I’m still waiting. Meanwhile he “fixed” it well enough that it should be good for a few days.  I don’t trust that enough to bring all my food back, but it’s good enough to stock up for a couple nights’ worth of dinners.

Lame. That’s all I have to say.

I Painted It White – Part 2

Some of you probably recognize this chair from last month’s Weekend Junk feature.

I found her (yes, I shall be referring to the chair as a ‘her’ from here on) at Goodwill on Half-off Day for $19.99 $9.99!

Up close the wood had a few dings and scratches and the fabric was well-worn, but that ain’t nuthin’ some paint and new fabric can’t fix!

I removed the seat and painted the frame Creamy by Sherwin Williams.

While the paint was drying, I pulled the nails from the cushion and removed the fabric.

I found the new fabric at Joann’s for $10.99/yard. I bought ½ a yard and had a 40% off coupon…BAM!

I used the old fabric as a pattern and cut out a new seat.

Lots of staples later and that old fabric was long forgotten!

I put her back together and now I have a girl-crush!
