Weekend Junk #9

Weekend Junk
Wow, it’s been awhile since my last Weekend Junk post! May has been a busy month and I haven’t had time to do much shopping.
I had a busy schedule of BBQs over the long weekend, but I had to make time for a little thrifting! It’d been too long since my last bargain and I couldn’t take it anymore! I only found a couple pieces to feature, but I also bought 3 shirts and a pair of shorts.
The Goods:

Framed Picture  – Savers $7.99 $2.99 (I had a $5 coupon)
The Plan:
Picture – trash can
Frame – paint, distress, glaze, chalkboard?

Vase – Salvation Army $6.99 $3.50

I Painted It White – Part 1

You might remember the story about my boyfriend not wanting me to paint any furniture white. Well, I’ve decided to start a series featuring furniture that I end up painting white anyway!
You probably recognize this little table from a Weekend Junk post.

I bought it at Savers for $9.99 at the end of March. It’s been gracing my living room with it’s lovely oak presence ever since.
Finally I went to Home Depot, bought a sander, and sanded this little baby dull.

I primed it with the leftover Kilz primer from my bedroom.

I used Sherwin Williams ProClassic Creamy to paint the table. I don’t have a picture of the table before I decided to heavily distress it.

Hated it. So, I painted over most of the distressing and then lightly distressed the table again.

Better. Glaze time! I mixed Minwax Dark Walnut Stain with some Valspar Clear Glaze...wipe on, rub off.

Meanwhile, I painted the pull with Krylon’s ORB. The table doesn’t really have a drawer, but I like the pull, so I kept it anyway.
I finished off the table with a couple sprays of Minwax Polycrylic in Satin and added the pull back to the "drawer".

Here she is, in all her white glory!

Confession: I haven't unpacked any decorations...I had to dig through boxes to find these!

Kids

Saturday was a productive day. My dad worked on the bathroom, my mom and I painted, and my boyfriend cleaned up around the pool. Who knew the pool deck was white?! In the afternoon my boyfriend’s brother, sister-in-law and their 2 kids (4-year old girl and 2-year old boy) stopped by. They were in the area looking at houses, so they came by to say hi and check out my new digs.
Let me start by saying that I don’t have kids and I’m not really used to being around them, so I was exhausted when they left.
Of course they found the only toys in the entire house, the Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots that were a surprise item included with my B.Inspired Vintage purchase.

Photobucket

I still haven’t found the other arm…
Here’s a sneak peek of the bathroom vanity doors, complete with tiny, dusty footprints. I’m just glad the paint was dry…

Photobucket

And my mailbox keys are missing…
I’ll probably find them hidden with the robot arm.
It was fun to have them visit though. The kids are so cute and have the biggest personalities.
But it was a great reminder that I’m not ready for kids yet…or for a long time!

Bathroom Makeover Progress

The guest bathroom is so close to being finished…I can almost taste it.
(It tastes like paint chips and sweat)
My parents were here over the weekend and we finished up most of the bathroom projects:
·         Install new light fixture
·         Install new medicine cabinet
·         Replace beige light switch/outlets with white ones
·         Hang the towel bar and toilet paper holder
·         Hang shower curtain
·         Install new faucet

I still have to:
·         Finish painting the vanity
·         Paint around the new light fixture (the old one had a larger base)
·         Find a rug
·         Accessorize
Eventually I want to replace the large mirror with a smaller one, but that’s on hold until I find a cheap the perfect mirror.
No finished product yet, but I wanted to give you a preview:

That's the exact same wall as this before picture:

Taking Care of Business

I’ve been working on a lot of projects this week, but nothing is finished yet. Sooo, I’m going to take this time to share a few things:

Award
Allison at little lovelies gave me an award!

I wrote a “7 Random Facts About Me” post back in February. And honestly, I’m not interesting enough to come up with 7 more facts. So, f* the rules…and just visit little lovelies! Do it!

Labor Day Weekend

Last night I booked our vacation plans for Labor Day weekend…Vegas baby, wooo!
We’ll be staying at the Luxor for 3 nights! My boyfriend and I are meeting up with my best friend from college. I’m so excited to see him (yes, my college bff was a dude)! Benji and Sam reunion! I hope my boyfriend doesn’t get all weird when I run and jump into another guy’s arms…

Weekend Plans
My parents are driving down tomorrow to help out on some house projects. I’ve got quite a “Daddy-Do” list for my dad to work on Saturday.
·         Install new medicine cabinet
·         Install new bathroom faucet
·         Install new bathroom light fixture
·         Hang towel bar and toilet paper holder
·         Replace ugly beige switches/outlets throughout the house
While he’s working on those, my mom and I are going to paint the trim and doors in the living room/dining room/kitchen area. I’ll show off the progress next week.

I promised my dad sushi for helping me out, so tomorrow night we’ll be at our favorite sushi place.
Sushi on conveyor belts! Not only is dinner delicious, it’s fun! And cheap (each plate is $2 or less)!

Facelift!

The Junk House has a new look!

And new buttons!

Grab one off the sidebar!

(If you still see the old buttons, don’t worry. Eventually blogger and photobucket will get their shit together and realize there’s a new picture using that name…)
I’m still doing some tweaking, so if things look a little wonky this week, don’t be alarmed. It’s just me blindly fumbling through html codes.
So, what do you think?

What’s for Dinner?

Every Sunday afternoon I plan out dinners for the upcoming week. I usually eat out Friday and Saturday, so I usually only have to come up with 5 meal ideas. I write my meal list and a corresponding grocery list on notepads. I’ve been wanting to make a menu board for awhile now and Saturday I finally found the perfect frame! I was hoping to find a cute printable, but all of them have the days of the week listed. I like to give myself choices and decide that night which meal I want to eat.
Here’s the “perfect frame” ( Salvation Army - $1.00):

I spray painted the frame with Krylon Blue Ocean Breeze – Gloss (Wal-Mart only had gloss).

After the paint dried I distressed the details and edges with fine sandpaper.

Next, the usual Minwax Dark Walnut stain treatment: brush on with a foam brush, wipe off with paper towels.

While that dried, I used some scrapbook paper scraps to create the background.

I used stickers to spell out Menu. Yes, I tore the top of the M…I thought it wouldn’t be noticeable….that’ll have to be replaced.

Here’s my finished Menu white board. I used a wire easel from Hobby Lobby to display it. I love how it turned out. I think I just found my color inspiration for the kitchen curtains!

Yes, that's my real menu for the week.

Jelly Arms

I’m in pain today. These little limbs were not meant for heavy lifting.
Let me start from the beginning: When they dug the swimming pool at my house they spread the dirt throughout the backyard instead of hauling it away. Lazy! And they didn’t even spread it evenly…I’ve got hills in my backyard! So, I decided to hire someone to come level out the yard and haul away the dirt. I finally called yesterday and they had a cancellation, so he could come the next day. I was so excited about having a flat backyard within 24 hours I kind of forgot about a few major things…
Like that all this needed to be moved…

And that I had planned to salvage the scattered river rocks…

So, after work I put on my big girl pants and moved all this:

Into the garage

And gathered up some of the rocks

(Yes, that pile was done by bucket…until I said screw it and bought a wheelbarrow)
Yep, I did it all by myself. It just proves with enough motivation and determination you can do anything…you’ll just pay for it the next day.

Sunshine Cleaning

Have you seen the movie Sunshine Cleaning? I haven’t either, but it’s about 2 sisters that start a crime scene clean up service. I thought it was an appropriate title for this post. I showed off my icky blue bathroom (aka crime scene bathroom) a couple months ago…yes, I lived with it like that for almost 2 months.

Anyway, my mom was here a couple weeks ago and she painted the bathroom while I was at work last Monday. So, why did it take me over a week to show the transformation? Because the new color was hideous!

Misty Summer Day? I think not Glidden! It was a horrible lime/yellow color. So, I went to Home Depot, bought new paint, and re-painted the bathroom this weekend.

Lemon Pearl! It even sounds pretty!
*Side Note: There’s a guy who works in the paint department at Home Depot who is absolutely gorgeous. He also mixed the guest room paint for me. Let’s just say I’m more motivated to buy paint and start painting the rest of the rooms.
Picture time!
Before

After - Fail

After - Win

So, what’s next?
Install a new medicine cabinet (already bought)

Install a new faucet and paint the vanity black

Hang new light fixture (already bought)

Hang my favorite bathroom pictures

Replace the large mirror with a smaller, framed one
And of course a shower curtain!
I can’t wait to finish up and show off the completed room!

Cold as Ice

I mentioned last week that my mom was coming for the weekend to help me paint. And paint we did! I’m so excited to finally have a guest room that’s not hideous! If you were a follower in February I’m sure you’ll remember the before pictures. I’m sorry if they still haunt your dreams.

Before

We primed the walls to begin with…that pink semi-gloss was nasty business! I picked out Behr’s Ice Cube as the color and it turned out exactly how I’d imagined.

After

I’m on the hunt for a pair of nightstands and a small dresser. I’m finally excited to unpack now that I have a room to start decorating!
