Home/Life Goals Mid-Year Review

We’re almost half way through the year, so I figured this would be a good time to check on the home/life goals I made at the beginning of the year (you can see them here). It’s also a good reminder for me to see what I’ve been slacking on.

My first goal was to finally finish a room (or two). I’m hoping to have the living room and/or office complete before the end of the year. Let’s just say that I’m glad the year isn’t over yet because I haven’t made much progress on either room in 2014. So far in the living room all I’ve done is buy a new coffee table and a fiddle leaf fig. Luckily I’ve been a little more productive in the office - I’ve bought an end table, throw pillows, and a lamp. I also created a travel pin map for one of the walls.

I think this goal is still definitely achievable, so we’ll see where I end up in six months.

My next goal is to landscape the backyard. I can barely type that without laughing. That definitely has not happened yet. I’m not even going to show pictures because it’s so horrible looking. I did hang some flowers on the patio, so we’ll call that progress?

I’m still hopeful that we’ll make some progress this year…

My third goal was to stop procrastinating and call a professional! I’m happy to report that after three years the drywall in the house is finally finished. During the One Room Challenge, I hired a local drywall company to repair the drywall in the laundry room and on the ceiling in the hallway. I’m so happy that it’s done…I should have called sooner…

I’m not crossing this goal off the list yet because I probably still need to hire a landscaper.

OK, now let’s talk about personal goals. My first personal goal this year was to live healthier. I didn’t start the year off very well and I’m still not exercising like I should, but I’m happy to report I’ve lost all the weight that I gained last year! I cut flour, sugar, dairy and pretty much everything tasty from my diet since Memorial Day and the weight just melted off. Now I’ll be the first to admit that I can’t keep this up forever – I like burritos too much - but this whole thing has been a huge lesson in self-control. Apparently, if your coworkers bring in donuts, you don’t HAVE to eat them...who knew?!

Anyway, my plan is to eat like this until mid-July (about a week before our trip to Alaska). After that I’m still going to stick to smaller, healthier meals (lots of lean protein, fruits, and veggies), but with an occasional cheat meal (watching portion size).

The other personal goal that I made at the beginning of the year was to “enjoy life more”. This one is really hard for me to judge. I’m not sure if I’ve been successful or not…especially since I haven’t had tacos or ice cream in over a month (kidding, kind of). I still have the occasional bad day and days where I feel like I just go through the motion, but for the most part, I think I’ve been better at enjoying the little things and taking advantage of my free time. Plus I’ve been WAY less stressed out at work after changing jobs in March (same company and still finance, but a different group/program). It was definitely a good change for me…plus they might send me to England within the next couple months for work!

Anyway, let’s not score this one as being successful or not. We’ll just keep it as a reminder for the rest of the year.

So that’s where I’m at with my 2014 goals. I still have six months left, so we’ll see where I end up!

Did you make any goals this year?
